AEO for small businesses: who fixes AI visibility, and what it costs

By The SignalUp Team · Updated August 5, 2026

When a small business owner discovers ChatGPT recommends their competitor and not them, the market mostly offers two answers: an enterprise monitoring dashboard, or an agency retainer. Neither fixes the actual problem, and neither is priced for an SMB. Here's what the landscape really looks like — and the third option.

Monitor, advise, or fix — the three kinds of help

What you getTypical costWho it's for
Monitoring softwareDashboards tracking what AI engines say about your brand. They measure the problem; your site stays exactly as it was.$29–$500+/mo subscriptionBrands with a team to act on the data
AgenciesOngoing AEO/SEO service, strategy and content. Effective but open-ended.Roughly $2,000+/mo retainerMid-market and enterprise
Fixed-scope fixThe technical layer repaired once — crawlability, llms.txt, schema, answer-shaped pages — verified by a before/after rescan.One-time flat feeSmall businesses with a concrete, finite gap

Why "invisible to AI" is usually a finite, fixable problem

For most SMB sites the cause isn't brand weakness — it's mechanics. AI crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot don't execute JavaScript, so a JS-only site is blank to them. Missing llms.txt means no machine-readable summary of what you sell. Missing JSON-LD schema leaves engines guessing your category. These are bounded engineering tasks. You can list them, fix them, and re-measure — which is why a subscription isn't a precondition for getting into AI answers.

What a small business should actually do

First, measure for free: run a scan that asks the buyer questions your customers ask ("best your category software", "your service near me") across several engines and records who gets named. Second, fix the finite list the scan produces — yourself, or via a fixed-price service. Third, verify with a rescan about 60 days later; answers drift as models update, so the proof is a before/after comparison, not a promise. Only then decide whether ongoing monitoring is worth paying for.

Questions to ask any provider

Do you show me the exact prompts and answers behind your findings? Is the scope fixed and priced up front? Is success verified by a rescan I can see? Can I leave after the fix, or am I locked into a subscription? A provider confident in the fix will happily be measured on the rescan.

FAQ

My business doesn't show up in AI answers — who can fix it?

If the cause is technical (it usually is), a fixed-scope fix service or a capable developer working from a concrete gap report. Monitoring tools alone won't change what AI says; agencies will, but at retainer prices most small businesses can't justify.

Is there a one-time fix, without a subscription?

Yes — the technical layer can be fixed once and verified by rescan. SignalUp's Repair is exactly that: flat price, fixed scope, day-60 before/after proof. Ongoing monitoring afterward is optional.

How do I check what AI says about my business for free?

Run our free scan — real buyer questions across multiple engines, no credit card, no sales call. If you're absent, the report shows the specific gaps causing it.
