AEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

By The SignalUp Team · Updated August 4, 2026

Short version: SEO earns you a ranking in a list of results. AEO earns you a place inside the answer itself. Both matter, they share a foundation, and neither replaces the other.

What they share

Both start from the same foundation: pages that crawlers can fetch and parse, content that actually answers buyer questions, and structured data that removes ambiguity. Work done here compounds across both surfaces — which is why AEO is best understood as additive to SEO, not a substitute.

What genuinely changes

Three things. First, rendering tolerance: a JavaScript-only site can limp along in Google but is invisible to GPTBot and ClaudeBot. Second, selection pressure: an AI answer names two or three brands, not ten, so the cost of being absent is higher and the reward for being present is larger. Third, drift: AI answers change without notice as models retrain and retrieval indexes refresh, so AEO requires continuous re-measurement where SEO rankings move more slowly.

FAQ

Should I do AEO or SEO first?

Do the shared foundation first — it serves both. Then layer AEO-specific work on top. If AI assistants already drive purchase decisions in your category, measure your AI visibility immediately so you know where you stand.

Does ranking #1 on Google mean AI recommends me?

Not necessarily. Plenty of #1-ranked businesses are absent from AI answers while competitors with clearer, more citable content get recommended.

Can I measure AEO like SEO rankings?

Yes — track Share of Voice across AI engines: ask a fixed set of buyer questions on a schedule and record which brands each engine names. See our methodology.
