What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a business visible, citable, and recommendable inside AI-generated answers — the responses people get from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot and similar assistants. You may also see it called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) or AI visibility optimization; the terms describe the same discipline.
Why it exists
Buying behavior changed. Instead of typing "best accounting software for small business" into a search box and comparing ten blue links, a growing share of buyers now asks an AI assistant and receives a short, opinionated answer that names two or three brands. If your business is one of them, you win demand you never had to bid on. If it isn't, a competitor does — and you can't see it happening in any analytics dashboard.
How answer engines choose who to recommend
AI assistants compose answers from what they can read and trust. In practice that means:
- Crawlable, parseable content. Most AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Amazonbot) do not execute JavaScript. If your pages render client-side only, these engines see nothing.
- Structured data. JSON-LD schema (Organization, Product, Service, FAQPage) tells engines unambiguously what you sell, at what price, for whom.
- Clear, quotable claims. Engines lift concrete statements — prices, differentiators, guarantees — far more readily than marketing prose.
- Corroboration. Mentions and citations on pages the engines already trust (directories, review sites, industry publications) raise the odds a brand is named.
- Crawler guidance. robots.txt that welcomes AI crawlers, plus an llms.txt file that summarizes your business for language models.
What AEO work looks like
A typical AEO engagement has three phases. First, measurement: ask the engines real buyer questions and record which brands are named, cited, and recommended — this is your AI visibility baseline and competitive Share of Voice. Second, technical alignment: fix crawlability, add structured data, publish machine-readable summaries, and make key claims quotable. Third, maintenance: AI answers drift as models and indexes update, so visibility must be re-measured and repaired continuously.

FAQ
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Mostly, yes. AEO and GEO are two names for the same discipline: earning visibility inside AI-generated answers. The tactics overlap almost entirely.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO is additive to SEO, not a substitute. AI engines draw heavily on well-indexed, well-structured web content, so classic SEO hygiene remains the foundation.
How do I know if AI recommends my business?
Ask the engines the questions your buyers ask and record which brands come back. SignalUp automates this as a free scan.
